Currently ranked third in the PIAA D1 6A with a 15-3 record, the softball team is looking at two tough games coming up this week. The first is against Perkiomen Valley on May 5 and the second is against Spring-Ford on May 7 to end the regular season.
These games will ultimately dictate if the Warriors get a chance to compete for a PAC Championship and will determine the team’s district ranking.
The team is currently being led offensively by senior captain shortstop, Jenna Kaufman, who will play softball for Bloomsburg University next season.
Kaufman said one thing she has learned through playing this sport is that it applies to real life too, emphasizing how important it is to communicate with the people around you on and off the field. She says the team’s goal is to ultimately make it far into the postseason. The goal for the seniors, she added, is to make an impact that the rest of the team will cherish.
The team also benefits from the defense and leadership of Jillian McTamney who plays third base. The senior and captain will be heading to Salisbury University in the fall to continue her softball career. McTamney shared her favorite moment from MHS softball.
“A time I’ll never forget was playing Owen J. Roberts under the lights for the first time as a freshman.”

McTamney has enjoyed that she and her teammates are able to rise above their shortcomings such as when they did during their first game against Boyertown.
“We were down by a few runs and we weren’t playing our best game. Then we all took a step back and started to focus . We were able to come back and win.”
Another standout player helping propel the team this season is sophomore pitcher Sadie Fitch. Her ERA is currently 2.12, and she has been showing consistent growth and poise throughout the games. She talked about how she stays composed while on the mound.

“To stay focused in tight games I like to make sure I am paying attention to my teammates and the situation and controlling my breathing by not getting overwhelmed when people are hitting the ball.”
Her most rewarding moment so far of the season has been “getting to watch the team fall into place and become the players we are today.” She added that she likes that the team keeps pushing even when they are playing below their potential.
Fitch talked about her goals.
“My goals for the remainder of the season are to make it far into the playoffs and PACs and hopefully come home with a big win to end off this season. I hope to pitch well in these next games and be able to win for our seniors.”
The team also will be saying goodbye to senior Soleil Bond-Johnson, center fielder, whose speed is always a threat. She will continue to play softball at Bowie State University in Maryland.
Senior Lindsay Gebhardt has pitched well in her last season at MHS and has been a vital member of the team over her high school career.
This week’s schedule and going forward will be a challenge for the girls, but they are excited and ready.
