Seniors Dylan Wen and Karun Jayaram won the PAC doubles championship on May 2 at Perkiomen Valley High School. This was Wen’s second doubles title after his 2023 win with Akash Suresh.
After crushing Upper Merion’s Dillon Doan and Eytan Kuznits 6-1, 6-3, the duo went on to a dangerous game in the final round with a double tie-breaker– 6-2, 3-6, 7-6, 7-4– against Phoenixville’s Jared Vitz and Owen Graver, to bring home gold.
A month earlier, Wen won the PAC singles title, taking on Graver. Jayaram took third.
Wen picked up the racquet at the age of five and would play tennis with his father on their backyard neighborhood court. He started taking lessons at the Frog Hollow Racquet Club at seven and switched to the High Performance Tennis Academy at age 12.
Wen’s other hobbies include playing soccer, piano, and video games. He did not commit to playing college tennis but is interested in college club tennis. His favorite professional tennis player is Rafael Nadal, as Nadal goes for every shot and always tries to improve.
Jayaram said, “I feel pretty great after winning the title. Dylan is a very strong tennis player and an even better guy, so it was really fun playing with him. I’ve been playing tennis since I was 8 years old, but it was never really a competitive sport for me; rather, it was just having fun with friends. Coaches and friends were a huge part of how I played and who I am, and I’m glad to have met them all.”
Wen provided some advice to high school competitive tennis players.
“ I would advise them to take a few clinics or lessons to get started and play with others often. The only true way to get better is if you play with someone, and if you can get a hitting partner or a few and play consistently, you will see your improvement.”
For the third year in a row, Methacton remains undefeated in the PAC and won the team championship with an 11-0 season.
The boys did not have much luck with districts this year, falling in the singles quarterfinals to West Chester Henderson and in doubles to Conestoga in the first round.
Wen will pursue Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University, and Jayaram will pursue Biology at the University of Pittsburgh this fall.
