Academic decathlon takes ninth at states
March 21, 2022
The Academic Decathalon team competed in the state competition on March 11 and 12 at Souderton High School where they placed 9th overall, one of the best finishes in club history.
Maddie Shafer won the essay competition and earned a third place tie with Irene Biju in speech. Biju also walked away with third place finishes in the interview and the math sections. Angela Lian won first place in math, the focus being on probability and statistics. Emma McGrath scored second place in speech while senior Seth Huff was runner up in literature and science.
The Honors team was composed of seniors Shaffer, Lian and Biju while seniors James Laird, Devesh Posa and McGrath worked together on the Scholastic team. Huff and freshman Stephen McGrath competed at the varsity level.
Each team faces the following 10 subjects during competition: math, science, social science, economics, literature, music, art, essay, interview and speech.
Mr. Bruce Outland, the club sponsor, says he is very happy with the team’s performance and says he expected this year’s team to perform well.
Losing a number of competitors to graduation this year, the club is looking for new members of any grade and skill level to join.
Aspiring members can contact Mr. Outland at [email protected] for more information.
Next year’s theme will be centered around the American Revolution for all subject tests. The science section will focus on chemistry.
