The National Honor Society inducted 37 new members on Feb. 25.

NHS is an organization that focuses on four pillars: leadership, character, service and scholarship. Chapters are found in all 50 states as well as US territories, Canada, and various countries around the world.

The students picked to be a part of it are recognized for not only their academic achievements, but also for their dedication to giving back to their community and for their prominent leadership roles. Methacton officers of the four pillars spoke at the induction: Scholarship Officer Angela Li, Leadership Officer Jeffrey Gong, Character Officer Patrick Li and Service Officer Alexandria Ferrance. They first said a few words about what it means to be a part of the NHS organization and then read the bios of the 37 inductees.

Being a part of the program requires requires at least 10 hours of service per semester and maintaining a 3.0 GPA by the end of each marking period. The average chapter contributes 1,000 hours of service, $26,000 in charitable donations, 1,000 pounds of food to local, state, and national causes and 100 pints of blood.

Tenth-12th graders looking to be a part of NHS must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Requirements regarding leadership, service and character vary per chapter. Methacton requires applicants to answer various questions regarding the four pillars. New inductee Adeline Kleckner gave some insight for interested students.

“Do not only work hard in the classroom, but shine your light in the community as well. Grades are not the only thing that matters.”
